Trevelin was named one of the Best Tourism Villages in the world by the UN World Tourism Organization, and it’s no accident: a town of fewer than ten thousand people packs in an extraordinary mix of nature, Welsh heritage and Patagonian flavours. Here’s a guide to what you can do throughout the year.

🌷 Tulip season (October and November)

Trevelin’s signature spectacle: every spring the tulip farm opens its gates and rows of colour stretch out against the snow-capped Andes. It’s one of the most photographed views in Patagonia and draws more visitors from around the world every year. Book accommodation early — the town fills up fast. When the weather cooperates, there are hot-air balloon rides too.

🫖 Welsh tea and culture

Trevelin means “mill town” in Welsh (tre = town, felin = mill), and the heritage of the Welsh settlers is very much alive: tea houses serving cakes and tea the traditional way, century-old chapels, the Eisteddfod (a festival of song and poetry) and even Welsh language classes. Don’t leave without trying the Welsh black cake.

🎣 Fly fishing

The Río Grande (Futaleufú) and the surrounding rivers and lakes are an internationally renowned fly-fishing destination. The season runs from November to May, and licensed local guides offer wading and float trips. Trevelin also hosts fishing gatherings that attract anglers from across Argentina and abroad.

🚣 Rafting and adventure

About 40 km away, Corcovado offers rafting on one of the most beautiful rivers in the Andes. Closer to town you’ll find horseback rides — including outings on magnificent Friesian horses — catamaran cruises, kayaking and rural tourism circuits run by local producers.

🍷 The world’s southernmost wine route

In 2019 Argentina’s National Institute of Viticulture recognised the region as the first Geographical Indication in Chubut. There are more than a dozen vineyards and several wineries open to visitors — Contra Corriente, Nant y Fall, Casa Yagüe and Entre Senderos — producing cool-climate varietals such as Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling and Gewürztraminer, plus sparkling wines.

🍄 Mushroom season and the autumn harvest

In autumn the valley turns to ochre: it’s time for the Trevelin Valley Autumn Grape Harvest (a one-of-a-kind event) and for guided mushroom forays into the Andean forest, especially around Sierra Colorada.

❄️ Winter

Under snow, Sierra Colorada (17 km away) becomes a playground for snow games and outdoor activities, and half an hour away is La Hoya (Esquel), one of South America’s best powder-snow ski resorts. Winter is also perfect for Welsh tea by the fire and hearty mountain cooking.
