In Trevelin, as in most places, there are opportunities. As always the issue is to find them, in principle what we see is that there are very few people with knowledge of technology. The truth is that the technological movement of the platforms is very dynamic, half vertiginous and also changes very quickly.

Everything related to real estate is something that can be worked on a lot. From being co-host of AirBnB (there is a lot of offerings of cabins for daily rent) to adding with the publication of lots to sell through Instagram. When you come from other places you see things through different eyes, seeing opportunities is not difficult with that lens. Trevelin doesn’t stop being a town and people who have lived there for a long time logically don’t know the offering of things in other more populous places, so aggiorning or publishing things locally that are attractive to people from other places can be something interesting.

The challenges of moving to Trevelin

Trevelin is a beautiful place, but it has its challenges, like all places, I suppose. In Chubut, for example, there are a little more than 2 people per square kilometer, so the commercial movement, the access to things is compromised because -precisely- there are no people to sell a lot to.

The biggest challenge for us was access to transitional housing. For others it will be other things such as health, children’s education, work or a place where they can buy land at an affordable price.

The town has several places where one can be treated, the largest and most eye-catching of which is the public hospital, the Hospital Rural Trevelin John Daniel Evans, which is the main medical care center in the area. The hospital has a wide range of medical services, including emergency care, outpatient consultations, surgery, maternity and pediatric care, and palliative care. In addition, the hospital also has an ambulance service and an intensive care unit.

In Trevelin there are several real estate agencies, they are all really very friendly, they don’t usually compete a lot with each other because it is not common for an owner to have her property in several real estate agencies at the same time. There are more real estate agencies in Esquel and they tend to have a lot of Trevelin properties in their portfolio.

The real estate agencies have a penchant for working with certain types of properties, for example fields, “rentals”, lots. We personally interacted with Wyn (Martin the owner, a great guy, he showed us everything, his son also works with him in the real estate agency, a genius too) and with Valle Creciente, with whom we were able to close a deal, Ariana is super friendly and super expeditious.

Schools in Trevelin

Even though Trevelin is a small town there are many schools, including English institutes. Unfortunately the province of Chubut has had many problems of government administration for many years and this makes strikes quite common. There are private schools, but they are much fewer and not especially better than the public ones. Remember that public schools are quite good in Argentina (in spite of what “people say”), outside the big cities they are the only option and the best teachers, the ones with the best vocation work there.

If you want to go on vacation to Trevelin it is an excellent idea. There are three hundred thousand things to do and all of them are great.

Coming to Trevelin as a digital nomad is an excellent idea. Depending on what kind of life you want to have in Trevelin it is advisable to come in warm or cold months.

If you are looking for peace in the shelter of a warm space, perhaps a salamander burning some logs, winter would be best, of course. Also to have nearby for skiing or sledding in childhood style the options are La Hoya for skiing and/or Sierra Colorada for sledding and why not a horseback ride through the snow. Both places are less than 40 km. away.

In our case Trevelin was not the first choice, but then we realized that it was the most appropriate. The initial reasons were personal, some remote relative, some of the family history had ties with this place, but the most important ones were others:

Trevelin is an orderly town. Orderly in the sense that there is an urban planning, the lots are well delimited, everybody sells with a deed and there are many places where the real estate management is thought for the growth of the place. Services (water, electricity, gas, internet) are being brought everywhere and the existing networks are working well. Nearby (40km) there is a dam and high voltage cables can be seen passing in the distance. While I am not certain, the whole town must be supplied with electricity from there which means that the power does not go out. There are no settlements to be seen, nor are there any taken fields or spaces.
